GUEST POST: J f'n' J's 100 Best Hardcore Punk Records!

Today we have a very special guest post by Chicago scenester, J f'n' J. He's played guitar in numerous chicago punk bands so you know he's qualified to make this list and set the rest of us straight. The rules are pretty much the same as my list: No compilations, no best of's, between 1976 and 1989, etc., etc. One difference is that J f'n' J allowed tapes in special circumstances where all my releases had to be vinyl. We hope to have more guest posts of the best 100 records (there's rumors that calbee is making a list and checking it twice...). Here goes - enjoy:

1. Crucifucks - Crucifucks
Best punk record of all time. Very antagonistic and very simple. Harsh yet perfect production by Spot. Best lyrics and you can't beat Doc's voice.

2. Bad Brains - ROIR
The record that invented Hardcore. Got every punk band to play fast. Luckily not every band to play reggae. I counted this as an official release because it was so widely distributed and ROIR is a self proclaimed "Cassette album" label.

3. Cro Mags - Age Of Quarrel
Toughest album in the world. Nobody can replicate it, not even they anymore.

4. HitlerSS/Tampax - split ep
Northern Italian obscurity. Totally DIY production musically and graphically. HitlerSS has sick guitar tones and terrific snotty vocals. Tampax are completely out of control and over the top. Timing means nothing to them yet everything works somehow. Perfect production, Lo-Fi yet you can actually hear whats going on. If an Alien came down from mars and wanted to know what "punk" was This would be the first record I'd play.

5. Black Flag - Jealous Again
Best record by this hard working and influential band. Chavo was their best singer.

6. Mentally Ill - Gacy's Place
This Deerfield, IL obscurity has the punkest guitar sound ever. Insane sounding vocals and ridiculous lyrics.

7. Misfits - Bullet
Static Age is the best record the Misfits ever recorded and it should have been their first LP. Unfortunately they split up the recording and this record was all that was available of these recordings during their career (Beware is considered a collection). They had a very unique style and sound and probably the best punk crooner ever. The lyrics aren't as dumb as most people think.

8. Skrewdriver - Back With A Bang
Only two songs on this one but BWAB has to be their best recording ever. Total anthem for their place and time. "I Don't Like You" B-side destroys the original version.

9. Skrewdriver - Hail the New Dawn
Very catchy anthemic songs played with spirit. Great guitar and driving drum sound. So catchy and every song consistently good as the next. Most people will tell you that "All Skrewed Up" is the better LP because it's safe to say so but i think this one is much better. Politically i do not side with this record just as much as i wouldn't let me daughter date GG Allin.

10. Misfits - Horror Business
Nothing beats the 'Teenagers From mars/Children In Heat' combo

11. GISM - Detestation
from Japan. Completely over the top musically and visually.

12. Negative Approach - ep
One of the best Midwest HC records. Every song is memorable and classic. Production is perfect. Sounds as vicious as the Exorcist cover looks.

13. Feederz - Ever Feel Like Killing Your Boss
These guys were as crazy off the stage as on. Complete social misfits and pranksters. Perfect example of being harsh and abrasive without depending on guitar distortion.

14. Infest - Slave
Great production from Spot again. Every song killer. These guys were one of the first to take HC to the next level.

15. Neos - The Matian Brain Squeeze
Totally relentless live studio recording. Great lyrics and layout. Very fast for its time

16. Poison idea - Pick Your King
Fast and furious. Every song a killer

17. The Kids - Naughty Boys
Both Kids records are perfect all the way through. One of the best live bands I've ever seen even years after their prime. I kinda like this 2nd more than the first.

18. The Kids - 1st LP
19. Afrika Korps - Music to Kill By
Members of the Gizmos and Slickee boys. Great humourous lyrics about sex drugs and and zits! super catchy songs

20. Agnostic Front - Victim In Pain
One of the best NYHC records. Perfect sound. Ugly yet tight.

21. Sex Pistols - Never Mind..
The most overhyped punk band in the world but well worth it. Technically a better album than they and their fans would have you believe. Their US tour influenced more great bands than I can ever name. Plus I dig any singer who rolls their "R"s

22. Suicidal Tendencies - LP
Perfect record. Why did they think they could do it better?

23. Slaughter And The Dogs - Do It Doggie Style
Great rocking Punk record. A little bit of Oi mixed with some Ziggy era Bowie and Stooges.

24. Black Flag - Damaged
This would have been higher on the list but something about it always bugged me. Rise Above is one of the greatest songs ever but not enough to make this higher on my list

25. Youth Brigade - Sound And Fury (original)
Way better than the rerelease that would come out the same year. Great vocals and great sing alongs.

26. Dayglow Abortions - Out Of The Womb
Great hard hitting production. Sick record cover. Totally retarded lyrics and no respect for society. I like this better than the Feed Us A Feotus because of the art and the mastering.

27. Antidote - ep
Great guitar sound and breakdowns. One of the best pick slides ever recorded!

28. Raw Power - Screams From The Gutter
Killer record. Has more a punch than You Are The Victim and the soloing is over the top.

29. Child Molesters - Wir Lieben die Jugendich Madchen
These guys look and sounded exactly like you expect from a name like this. Fortunately it was all a joke but these songs rule. "Wholsale Murder" is one of my favorite punk songs ever. I think the solo to "I'm So Fucked Up" sounds like the guitar head is being dragged down a flight of stairs.

30. Flipper - Gone Fishin'
I like this record more than Generic. It’s a little more experimental and has a great sound. They did no wrong.

31. Bad Brains - Rock For Light
Great record but terrible production thanks to Rick Ocasek, surprisingly Someone should have turned up the bass. The remix of this album, the only one available now, is overprocessed and sped up. The original mix for 3 of these songs turned up on the I and I Survive 12" If the whole album was mixed that way it could have been my #1

32. Dead Kennedys - Fresh Fruit for Rotting Vegetables
Great record. Probably should be higher on the list but I think I'm at the age now where I think Jello is a bit silly.

33. Minor Threat - 1st EP
One of the best 7""s of all time. Best guitar tone ever. Great vocalist.

34. Bruisers - Intimidation ep
One of the best oi records period.

35. GG Allin - Always Was…LP
Best record by this madman who's voice would later be destroyed by too much beer, smoke and poop.

36. Youth Of Today - We're not In This Alone
The original mix of this record is VERY different than the remix and is far superior. Totally ripping guitar sound and crazy drumming. Great lyrics too by an amazing frontman. Again should be higher on the list but I was never SxE.

37. Septic Death - Now that I Have The Attention…
Their 2nd album. THE craziest drum sound I've ever heard. Totally unique song structure. Great artwork, twisted vox and lyrics from everyone's favourite Metallica cartoonist.

38. Social Distortion - Mommy's Little Monster
Great songs very catchy. One of the first punk bands I ever heard thanks to Night Flight.

39. Meat Puppets - I LP
Totally relentless record. Most readers of Rolling Stone (and Nirvana) will tell you their 2nd album is the best but it is not. There is some great out of control guitar/vox on this record. Another masterpiece recorded by Spot.

40. Void/Faith - split LP
Void are a great band. Awesome guitar playing and out of control singer. No band should cover them. It's down here because although the Faith are good, they aren't great.

41. SSD - Get It Away
IMO the best Boston HC record. Very loud and full sound. Almost verging on crossover but not really. Glue is unbeatable.

42. The Boys - The Boys
Very underrated record. Extremely catchy songs on this UK one.

43. Radio Birdman - Radios Appear
A bunch of Australians who you think grew up in Detroit. Perfect record. Not abrasive but super catchy and every song perfect.

44. Uniform Choice - Screaming For Change
One of the first HC records I ever heard when it came out. Super catchy and a great guitar tone. Marred only by a spoken word poem at the end.

45. Redd Cross - Born innocent
This is a great rocking punk record. Should be higher on the list I suppose.

46. COC - Technocracy
Only 3 songs on this (the 4th being a joke…I think?) but it’s a great record. Slick production, major label and long songs but I still love it. Great packaging too. Most people choose Animosity over this but I prefer Simon Bob's voice to Mike Dean. Call me crazy.

47. Stalin - Stop Jap
One of the best Japanese punk records ever. Super catchy, great frontman.

48. Users - Sick Of You
2 songs with THE best guitar tone ever. Not rocket science which is why it's down here.

49. Germs - Lexicon Devil
Great lyrics and great sound. I prefer this over the LP's too slick production. Slick is not what I think of when I wanna hear the Germs.

50. Brats - 1980
Pretty unknown band outside of Denmark (before the internet at least) This was pretty much Mercyful Fate before king Diamond joined. It's a great mix of punk and NWOBHM. Catchy songs and a great cover design too.

51. Iron Cross - Skinhead Glory
52. Rezillos - Can't Stand The Rezillos
53. Unnatural Axe - They Saved Hitler's Brain
54. Deep Wound - ep

55. PF Commando - Manipulerade Mangon

56. DOA - Hardcore '81

57. Heart Attack - Keep Your Distance

58. Koro - ep

69. DMZ - DMZ

77. Dow Jones & the Industrials - Can't Stand The Midwest

78. United Mutation - Fugitive Family

79. FU's - My America

80. Gauze - Equilizing Distort

81. X Ray Spex - Germ Free Adolescence

82. Angry Samoans - Back From Samoa

83. Die Kreuzen - Cows and Beer

84. Gasoline - Killer Man

85. Husker Du - Everything Falls Apart

86. Mad - I Hate Music

87. Damned - Damned Damned Damned

88. Saints - I'm Stranded

89. SS - SS

90. The Next - Make It Quick

First of all - Amazing List! thanks for posting. We have 40 of the same records. Pretty cool. I have a bunch of comments so I'll post them separately. Crucifucks at number one on both of our lists. I'm listening to the Hitler SS / tampax split right now. I don't know if I've ever listened to it before. Great record.

About 'Back with a Bang', it is amazing but I really tried to leave off two song "singles", (I still included the weirdos and flipper singles). Next we should make a list of the 100 best punk songs - this song would be on the list as would the authorities.

Could you tell me about the unnatural axe record. I wanted to put it on my list, but I couldn't find any releases in their time. Definitely deserving of this list.

Listening to the neos right now - awesome. This list is turning me on to some new bands. I've never heard infest before. It's okay - kind of reminds me of this old chicago hardcore band called Silence.

I was surprised. A 40% similarity is less than I would think but I think we both stuck to A-list bands. Yeah I didnt want to list too many 2-song singles but sometimes less is better.

The Unnatural Axe record is a 4 song EP that came out in 1978. They Saved Hitler's Brain, The Plug, Summertime & The Creeper. The Plug is a great song that someone covers. You told me about it but I cant remember who it is. i found it for $60 which is actually a bargain now.

yeah Neos are great too. they were from some small town in Canada. The lyrics are really cool. Next time you're over I'll show you the fold out cover.

yeah I am going to have to throw on some of this stuff. even DK who I haven't listened to in years.

Well, it's funny that we picked a lot of the same bands but different records (1st misfits choice, poison idea, daygow Abortions [kind of], flipper, SSD, Germs, DOA, and Dicks). I don't think you were wrong (except for poison idea choice) as I was hemming and hawing which record to use.

Aw, I fucked up, then. Unnatural Axe record should be my number 66 with everything else being pushed down and BGK coming off the list completely (sorry, BGK).

The Plug was covered by Dim Stars which had richard hell from The Voidoids and Thurston Moore and Steve Shelley of sonic youth. Steve shelley also happened to play drums on the greatest punk record of all time (according to us).

Oh yeah! Dim Stars. they are great. One thing I left off that you didn't was Lifetime by Rollins Band. I should have thought of it before because it is a great album.
